It was nice. Quiet. Peaceful.

Ashby sighed happily as he turned the page in his book. He had chosen a nice secluded area away from any people to read his novel. Even though he was far from a road, he wasn't worried about finding his way back. He was so still, the wildlife didn't mind him, but the larger game still stayed a healthy distance away.

He was so still it was almost unnatural, barely even moving to turn the page.

Elsewhere in the woods, Josh was stalking silently through the underbrush. He was covered from head to toe in camouflage and had his scent covered by doe urine. He clutched his rifle as he peered through the leaves, determined to get a buck before he went home for the night.

Ashby paused and looked up, smelling something farther upwind. Shrugging it off as unimportant, Ashby shrugged and turned the page, shifting and rustling the undergrowth softly. Nothing here could hurt him.

Josh heard the movement before he identified where it had come from. He couldn't quite make out the shape of the thing by the tree, but it had a large light patch on it, and all Josh could think of was white-tailed deer. He silently settled the rifle's stock on his shoulder and pressed his eye to the scope. It took his less than three seconds to aim, and there was a soft 'pop' noise as the bullet left the silenced muzzle of the gun.

Ashby looked up at the click he heard, snarling at his book was suddenly blown apart and something small and metallic impacted with his neck. "SonovaBitch!" He snarled, baring his fangs as he threw his now decimated book to the ground in anger and jumped to his feet. "Who the hell's there?!" He demanded.

Josh dropped his rifle and fell back onto his ass in shock. He'd just shot that guy, right in the neck, and he'd just jumped right up like nothing had happened. He wasn't really sure what he should be more concerned about.

"Shit, man," he said with a thick southern drawl, "you okay? I thought ya were a deer!"

Ashby stalked over to Josh and stood over him. "I am not alright!" He snarled. He pointed to his discarded book. "That book is out of print!" He bent over to bare his teeth in Josh's face, then drew back in disgust. "You reek of animal excrements." He stated coldly.

Josh just stared up at him incredulously, having trouble believing that the man was more upset about his book than the fact that he just got shot in the neck. "Uh, s-sorry, man..." he said. "Didn't mean ta mess up yer book. You sure you ain't hurt er nothin'?"

"Like you could hurt me with that primitive thing." Ashby snorted, as if he'd been insulted. "I expect you to replace that book by the way." He walked back over to to his tree and picked up what remained of the bullet. He gave a contemptuous 'hmph' before tossing the bullet over his shoulder, to land at Josh's feet.

Josh stared in awe at the remains of the bullet at his feet. He'd fired bullets at rocks and had them come out looking better than that one did. His eyes went back to the silver-haired man in front of him, wide with shock. "W-what are you, man?"

"Yowie." Ashby replied evenly, not even looking back at him. "Aboriginal Vampire" He bent down and almost lovingly gathered the remains of his book.

"A vampire...? So ya, like, drink blood...?" he asked nervously, leaning back a little and covering his throat with one hand nervously. "Uh, I'll get ya a new book, man. Didn't mean ta do that, really."

"I do not drink blood" Ashby scoffed. "Stupid american stereotype." He scowled, straightening.

Josh sighed, relieved, and moved his hand from his throat. He nervously got to his feet and dusted himself off. "So, uh, what's yer name, man? I'm Josh. Figure if I'm gonna accidentally shoot ya, I may as well innerduce myself."

"Ashby" Ashby replied stiffly. "Why were you out here anyway?" He asked, finally turning back to the young man.

"I 'as tryin' ta get one more buck for the year. I was hopin' ta have some deer jerky this winter, but it don' look like that's gonna happen," he said with a sigh. "An' it's good ta meet ya, Ashby. I'm really sorry, man. I mean it."

"Wait here." Ashby stated. He took a step forward and was gone.

"Wha-" Josh began, then stopped. He looked around, but saw absolutely no trace of Ashby. It was... eerie.

"What are you looking at?" Ashby asked, behind Josh. Not a silver hair was out of place on his head and his clothes were still crisp, despite the large buck on his shoulder. "Will this do?"

Josh's mouth fell open in disbelief, and he just stood there for a moment, gaping at Ashby. He licked his lips, his mouth suddenly feeling dry. "Yeah... Yeah, that'll more than do. That's a nice big buck ya got, Ashby. I'm... impressed." In truth, he was much more than impressed. He actually found himself inexplicably attracted to this man who could probably easily break him in half. He let his eyes wander up and down Ashby's thin frame for a moment, wondering about his orientation and whether he would prefer top or bottom, while trying not to make his thoughts too obvious on his face.

"Where do you want it then?" Ashby asked, still sounding a bit more than agitated because of his book. He had no intention of his comment sounding like he ment anything but the deer. "I assume its too heavy for you to carry"

"Oh! My property borders these woods," he said. He pointed in the direction of his house. "Smokehouse is right on the edge. I'll show ya the way. ...and thanks, man. This is awesome."

Ashby grunted. He nodded for Josh to lead the way.
