For So Damn Long

Beau laughed and rolled his eyes, reclining his seat back so that he could relax and think. "Alright, sweetheart, just keep your eyes on the road. You have to get us there in one piece first. So, anyway, how are we going to decide? Or should we let them pick us?"

"Hmm. Well, when I was thinking about it before, you said that we should pick a kid that really needs it. A kid at one of the ages where its difficult to be adopted, but one that's still on school so I don't have to quit work." Chris pursed his lips thoughtfully. "Why don't we wait and see. Unless you want to pick?"

"Hmm.... Wait and see, I think," he said. "I don't think you can really plan this sort of thing. Like love, I think; it just happens how it happens."

Chris grinned widely. "How poetic of you." he giggled.

Chris hesitated at the doors of the large intimidating building. "Th-this is the place" he stammered softly. He held Beau's hand tightly. "A-are we ready?"

"I dunno, Chris," he replied nonchalantly. "Are we?" He smiled down at his lover and gave his hand a squeeze. "Yeah, we're ready."

When they got inside, Beau went straight to the office to talk to the administrators. They were in there for a while before they got to go out and meet the kids. Beau looked around at all of them smiling, then asked them all who wanted to be adopted the most. One little girl nearly ran over all the other kids to get to him.

"We do, mister, we do!"

"We?" he asked. She turned to point to a boy the same age as her.

The boy hung back almost shyly, though he looked more grouchy than shy. He blew his bangs from his face almost impatiently.

Chris smiled and almost laughed. Of course this would happen to us, he thought to himself it only stands to reason, since twins run on both sides of my family anyway. "I think they would be perfect" He mumbled to Beau with a smile. He would wait to tell Beau the ironic hilarity of this when they got home.

The little girl looked up at them hopefully, glancing back and forth between them. "Are you... are you gonna pick us?" she asked, blushing with sudden shyness. She looked back over her shoulder at her brother and motioned for him to come over. "Tracey, come say hi! Don't you wanna get adopted?"

Beau smiled and pulled Chris against him in a tight, one-armed hug, taking the opportunity to mumble into his ear, "I think so too. Twins don't get adopted a lot of the time."

Tracey unwillingly stepped forward, his hands shoved deep in his pockets and his eyes on his feet.

Chris nodded. "Remind me to tell you a funny thing about twins when we get home," he smiled.

"M'Tracey" The boy mumbled to the floor.

Beau grinned at him. "Nice to meet you, Tracey. And what's your name, sweetie?"

"Callie..." she said, blushing. "Uh, what're your names? Are you choosing us?"

"I'm Beau, and this is Chris. And to answer your question..." he looked at Chris with an eyebrow raised, letting him answer.

"Of course we are" Chris smiled. "How could we say no?"

Tracey ducked his head a little more, but only so they wouldn't see him grin.

"All we have to do is finish the paperwork, then we can all go home and start being a family together" Chris looked up at Beau happily.

Beau laughed and shook his head. "You're such a doofus, Chrissy. But, yeah. So, you two run off and get your stuff together, okay? Me and mon petit chou will go and take care of all the business stuff. Aight?"

Callie giggled and nodded before running to her brother's side and tugging on his arm. "C'mon, Tracey, let's go get ready! Aren't you excited?!"

Tracey nodded and allowed Callie to drag him off to gather their meager things.

Chris smiled after them. "When we get home, after I start dinner, I think I'm going to have to call my mother" he commented. "Do you think I should, or should I wait?"
