Rain Dance

Kimi's fingers twined themselves into the fabric of his shirt and she slowly stopped shuddering. His voice, not the singing per say, just the sound of his voice, was very soothing to her.

Voltaire continued to sing to her, seeing that it was helping her relax. It was helping him feel less nervous too.

Kimi sighed and curled closer to him. She was slowly drifting off, but she was unsure that she wanted.

Voltaire rested his head on top of Kimi's as he sung, growing sleepy himself.

"Taire?" Kimi mumbled. "Are you really okay with this?"

"...The timing's kinda crappy, but timing usually isn't on my side anyway," remarked Voltaire drowsily. "But yeah, I'm okay with it. I'm not gonna be running away from it or anything. I'll be here."

"...Promise?" She whispered, her grip tightening on his shirt ever so slightly.

"I promise," he assured, kissing her forehead. "Adair and Ava are here too. I guess they're...uncle and aunt?"

Kimi gave a half hearted laugh. "Yeah. I guess you're right."

"Anyway, they'll be there if...they'll be there," Voltaire answered. "Guess I better get used to sleepless nights, huh? Or learn some actual lullabies."

"I wonder what species it will take after." Kimi murmured

"Mom I'm guessing, since that's where he's being made," Voltaire guessed, poking her stomach. The word mom felt odd on his tongue. "Being demon would probably be more convenient for him anyway."

"I suppose" Kimi graced him with a small smile. "It would make it more sturdy."

"It would," Voltaire replied. "Wonder if kid'll get any fire skills. I've heard rumors that changeling powers can be passed on to some extent, but I don't know any real case of it."

"Maybe" Kimi giggled. "We can only hope."

"Yeah," Voltaire agreed. "Hope the kid's not too much like Dad either way." Dad. Lord, that word tasted even stranger.

"I would love if it was like you" Kimi smiled

"A brat?" Voltaire teased, chuckling. "You would not like the little me. Ask Adair." He nuzzled her anyway.

"It all depends on your environment." Kimi smiled. "Look how you turned out. Look how I turned out..." Kimi fell silent.

"I was in an orphanage for a while. Not fun," Voltaire replied, deciding to leave it at that. "But hey, if we're there to look after him he should be better off than both of us."

Kimi nodded. "What's an orphanage?" she asked after a moment of silence.

"A place where kids with no parents end up," Voltaire replied. "You earn your keep by getting shots that force some soul out of you, which they sell to whoever or whatever. Not fun."

(Orphanages here aren't actually like that. Voltaire was just unlucky enough to end up in something posing as an orphanage. But he doesn't know the difference)

"That doesn't sound very nice." Kimi mumbled.

"It's not," Voltaire replied. "One more reason for to stay and make sure everything goes alright."

"Hmmmm." Kimi mumbled, the only response Voltaire got before she drifted off to sleep.
