Saving Soul

"So they're hard for the enemy to turn off?" Anja suggested

"Probably," Adair replied, after finally finding the switch under one of the gator's legs. The contraption jerked to life and immediately began squirming in Adair's hands, its jaw snapping. Hurriedly he set it on the ground, where it headed straight for Anja.

Anja aimed a blast of fire right into the contraption's mouth.

There was a small explosion inside the gator, and then it collapsed and lay there in a smoking heap.

"That was anti-climatic," Adair remarked dryly.

"It was coming right for me. I didn't want to find out what it was supposed to do." Anja replied.

"Fair enough," Adair replied, tossing the now-empty bag aside. "Well, that concludes practice. Out of targets."

"Darn." Anja smirked. "What A shame."

"Indeed. We'll have to wait until he makes more," Adair replied boredly. "Which I'm sure he will. He'll be pissed when he gets back."

"Oh well. What do you want to do now?" Anja asked

"Well..." Adair began, before he felt his stomach growl. "How about lunch? Between Ava and Taire we should get more food soon, so we can look through the supplies and see what we have."

"Alright. I could eat." Anja replied. "I think I saw a pear tree outside with some baby pears. They're pretty good it you roast them."

"Roasting shouldn't be a problem," replied Adair, lazily blowing out some fire. "Let's do that. We don't have much food supply on hand." Which shouldn't have surprised him, he supposed. No one had been doing much hunting while Anja was being treated and he and Voltaire had been test subjects.

"We can gather a bunch more if we use the empty contraption bag." Anja stated

Adair glanced over to the discarded sack. "True. It would be a better use for it anyway." He went over to get the sack.

Anja stepped outside and quickly found the tree she had been talking about.

"Oh yeah, these look good," said Adair as he began to pick some of them. "It'll be nice to have something other than meat. Not that I don't like meat, but that's usually all we have."

"They're still hard and unripe. That's why you roast them." Anja stated "Plus they last longer like this"

"I know," Adair replied. "I've had these before, a while back."

Anja started to climb up into the tree. "There might be some ripe ones higher up"

"Careful," called Adair, though he wasn't that worried. The tree wasn't that big.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah." Anja replied with a snort. She continued climbing up.

Adair smirked back before noticing Ava flying overhead.

"Hi Fiery! Hi Anjy!" the phoenix greeted as she flew back.

"We'll eat good tonight!" called Voltaire. "Got lots of stuff."

Adair felt a little bad as they flew toward the cave. Voltaire's good mood wouldn't last long.

"We should probably hide." Anja remarked. She picked a few ripe pears.

"...Yeah," Adair agreed, nagging a few more pears before heading for a more wooded area.

Anja climbed up higher in the tree.
